What is a Larp?
If you don’t know what a larp is, no problem, we’re here to help.
But know that it’s easier to just play one than to explain it!
Almost like a movie.
See the video here beside? It’s not a movie trailer but a live action role-playing game (or rather a LARP) by the Chaos League.
Unlike watching a movie, you don’t play a larp by sitting comfortably on your armchair. You live it by stepping into the shoes of one of its characters. What you do is up to you!
Alright, but what is a Larp, then?
It is a space where people decide to tell a story by living it in first person.
It is a sort of ‘pretend play’ for adults. It is people meeting through their characters: their contact and interaction lead to the creation of a narrative.
In Europe, about 100.000 people play larps.
To play a larp is by far easier than to explain it.
What are the nuts and bolts?
Basically you step into the shoes of a character and behave just like your alter ego as long as the game lasts.
This means you will eat, sleep, talk and breathe like someone else, even for days in a row. You will adhere to your role and the setting to the fullest. No audience will be watching you, you will interact with other players just like you.
You will not be handed any written lines to recite, you will rely only on improvisation.
Where do these larps take place?
Each event is a separate story set in a special location such as a castle, a forest, or a village.
The game organisers make up everything: they choose the theme and the setting, research history and take care of logistics, prepare props and special effects, help players develop their characters.
And what shall I do?
As a player you will live the narrative in first person: you will unravel mysteries, solve problems, face your limits and overcome them. Be sure you will be moved. You will open your heart. A larp takes you mind, body, and soul.
Just go with the flow. Interact with other players and the story will take unexpected turns. That’s why there can’t be two identical events. This is one of the key strengths of larping: it is an experience you live on your skin, there’s no other way to understand it than take part in one.
I do not have any previous experience in a larp, I’ve never acted in theatre and never will, can I play anyway?
Of course! No previous experience is required, we play with all sorts of people with different interests and passions. You just need to be up to take a challenge.
What is a Larp?
It is an interactive theatre performance where each participant/player acts out a character. No one but the organisers know how the story will evolve.
What do you mean by interactive?
In a larp, each player actively contributes to the creation of a collective narrative. You play your part by acting out your character and by making your own decisive choices.
Is there an audience?
No, there isn’t. The only way to watch a larp is to play one.
Is there a script, a prearranged plot?
Yes and no. It would be fairer to say that there’s a script of an overall plot with different turning points. Yet new elements may be added as the story unfolds. The script is written by and known only to the organisers, while players go through the narrative simply by improvising and acting out their characters.
How can I get what it takes to play?
Don’t worry, we’ll be there to help you each step of the way, and it will be neither difficult nor expensive. We usually provide a costume rental service for our events. The rest you can easily find it in your attic.
On our blog you can find reviews, tutorials, articles and essays written by us and by other Italian and foreign larpwriters and game designers. A blog allabout larps. Enjoy!
