Enhance

Enhance Empathy and Understanding towards LGBTQIA+ Communities through Larp.

The project aimed to contribute to a better understanding of the complexities of LGBTQIA+ culture and experiences by promoting the use of larp as a tool for building empathy and promoting participation and inclusion.

The results of the project included a toolkit to support communities to translate their own narrative in larp form to convey their story and identity as experiential and transformative learning, plus a set of nano larp scenarios, designed by local queer communities tackling their specific needs.

The activities were co-funded by the Italian National Agency INDIRE under the Erasmus+ programme and implemented by: Chaos League (IT), Arcigay Palermo (IT), LajvVerkstaden (SE) and Nausika Foundation (PL).
About the project

How can we create learning spaces where empathy is not only discussed, but truly felt?

“Enhance Empathy and Understanding towards LGBTQIA+ Communities through Larp” (2023-1-IT02-KA210-ADU-000157368) is a small-scale strategic partnership project in the field of adult education that uses larp to uncover and transmit the emotional, social and historical dimensions of queer communities, promoting empathy, inclusion and participation through embodied experiences.

The approach

The project was implemented through a combination of international learning activities, local experimentation and collaborative development of educational resources. The partnership organised two peer training activities, hosted in Kraków and Palermo, where educators, facilitators and community organisers explored larp design methodologies, inclusive facilitation practices and approaches to working with sensitive social topics.

Partners also organised Local Labs within their communities, where participants experimented with storytelling and designed small larp scenarios connected to themes of identity, community and queer experiences. Throughout the project, partners collaborated on the development of a methodological toolkit documenting the approaches tested during the activities.

“Developing Empathy Through larp” Toolkit

Developed together by educators, larp designers and queer activists, the toolkit grows out of real exchanges, experiments and community needs. Rather than offering a single “right way” to design larps, it encourages you to start from the people you work with: their stories, their contexts, their realities.

Inside, you’ll find a mix of ideas and practical tools: from understanding LGBTQIA+ contexts and larp basics, to designing meaningful experiences, facilitating groups, and guiding reflection. There are also concrete structures to help you co-create scenarios and adapt them to your own setting.

Partners

The project is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission through Erasmus+ INDIRE and implemented by Chaos League (Italy), Arcigay Palermo (Italy), Nausika Foundation (Poland) and LajvVerkstaden (Sweden):

Chaos League is an Italian collective with over 25 years of experience in designing larp and immersive experiences for educational and artistic purposes. It develops transformative projects addressing social issues such as migration, environmental crises, and discrimination, collaborating with schools, NGOs, and companies.
Arcigay Palermo is a non-governmental organisation based in Italy, active since 2010, dedicated to promoting LGBTQI+ rights and supporting the queer community in western Sicily. It provides key services such as support for LGBTQI+ migrants and refugees, STI prevention and testing, and an anti-discrimination centre offering legal and psychological assistance.
Nausika Educational Foundation is a Polish organisation focused on strengthening non-formal education through cooperation between experienced educators and young people. It organises workshops, training courses, and youth initiatives at local and European level, with a strong focus on larp-based learning and the inclusion of people from diverse and marginalised backgrounds.
LajvVerkstaden is a non-profit organisation based in Västerås, Sweden, working across Europe with larp as a pedagogical method and art form. It creates participatory experiences for children, youth, and educators, promoting creativity, democracy, and equal rights through inclusive and accessible activities.
